Beowulf- A.S. Kline Translation |
Beowulf- Raffel Translation |
Beowulf- Stern, Steiniger, Studabaker |
This translation will be the main translation that we will be using for Beowulf. This translation has the most poetic feel, and captures the art of the original text. Because of it's closeness to the original, it also makes it the more difficult one to analyze and interpret. Some paper copies will be available in class, but students will mostly be using their electronic devices to access the text.
|
We will also be using the Glecoe Literature mini textbooks in class to aid in our understanding of the story. This translation still keeps the story in a poetic format, but loosens its grip on the main elements found in Anglo-Saxon literature (alliteration, caesuras, epithets, and kennings). For this reason, we will be using this version as the main companion to A.S. Kline's translation.

The final version that we will be using is this graphic novel. Areas of this text are greatly expanded whiles others are shortened. It will be use only in comparison during the close reading activity.
